Inspector Maria Wern and her team investigate criminal cases on the idyllic island of Gotland, East of Stockholm in the Baltic Sea.

The films are based on the characters from Anna Jansson’s series of novels of the same name. In every episode Maria is confronted with a new case. The island is small, the team consists of only few colleagues, and like everywhere else in the world there are no fixed working hours at the police station in Visby, the island capital. Along with the investigations we accompany Maria in her everyday life. She is a single mother of two children, Emil and Linda. Despite her efforts in day-to-day investigative work — Maria is tenacious in her search for truth and justice — we see her as an empathetic, devoted and caring wife and mother who faces the normal challenges of family life.
